prettygoodwordA couple weeks ago, I was supposed to be running a theme week of paired words, only I got sick and didn't post all five pairs. So I'm trying this again. Theme: doublets.
anadromous (uh-NAD-ruh-muhs) - adj., (of fish) migrating from salt water to spawn in fresh water.
catadromous (kuh-tad-ruh-muhs) - adj., (of fish) migrating from fresh water to spawn in salt water.
Yes, stress on the second syllable -- I was guessing the first or third. Salmon are anadromous and some eels, interestingly, are catadromous. Anadromous was coined first, around 1750, from Greek anadromos, running upward, from ana-, up + dromos, to run, while katadromous had to wait till the 1880s, from Greek katadromos, running downward, from kata-, down + dromos.
