epexegesis (ep-ek-si-JEE-sis) - n., the addition of a word or phrase explaining word or phrase.


That is to say, glossing one's own words. The phrase "that is to say" is a common marker for an epexegesis. Borrowed in the 1570s from Greek rhetoric, where the word literally means explaining again, from epi-, again + exegeisthai, to explain.
