inselberg (IN-suhl-berg) - n., an isolated rocky hill rising abruptly from a flat plain.


This is a double repeat under other names, as I've run the two synonyms monadonk monadnock and kopje. This one is from German, literally island mountain (the others are from Algonquian name, literally isolated mountain, and Dutch/Afrikaans, literally little head).

Uh, "monadonk" is not a word, "monadnock" is. Vide "Mount Mondanock," which is the type specimen, et al.
