scuppernong (SKUHP-er-nawng) - n., a white variety of muscadine grape growing wild and cultivated in North America; a sweet golden wine made from this grape.


Also called scuplin and scuppernon. The fruits are larger than red muscadines. Named in the early 1800s after the Scuppernong River in North Carolina along which it grew and was first vinified, probably from an Algonquin name but exactly which has not been identified.
