cudbear (KUHD-bair) - n., a purple dye obtained from various lichens, esp. Lecanora tartarea or Roccella tinctoria.


Also known as crottle and by the modern trade names of orcein, archil, and C.I. Natural Red 28, and is a precursor of litmus. It was the first modern dye, as in the first developed using modern chemistry techniques (by extracting it using ammonia) by one Dr Cuthbert Gordon in 1758 -- who named it after himself with a spelling alteration.
