outré (oo-TREY) - adj., very unconventional, bizarre, outlandish.

With connotations of overdoing things, which comes from the French root: outré is the past participle of outrer, to go to excess, and in Modern French excessive is a primary meaning. (Note that outrage is an earlier derivative from the same verb.) Adopted around 1720, give or take.
