A toupee, now, but originally add-ins like curls and false buns -- so closer to contemporary extensions. Adopted around 1850 from French, from Italian apposticcio (a noun), from either Late Latin appositīcius or Vulgar Latin *appositīcius (both adjectives), either way with a sense of added to (and so cognate of apposite).
