vespertilionize (ves-per-TIL-yun-aiz) - v., to turn into a bat.


I am not at all clear on whether this is transitive (to transform someone else) or intransitive (to transform oneself) -- the two books of rare words in which this turned up disagree on this. I personally like to think it's intransitive: it's what a vampire does, rather than a witch. From vespers, evening.

I think if I hd to describe this, I'd say "embattify" or something. When I looked at the word, I thought it had something to do with time or with legislation (sunset laws).

My guess was "to advance towards evening," or possibly "to darken."
