andragogy / pedagogy
Apr. 7th, 2014 07:21 amI happen to have a bunch of doublets lined up, so might as well make them a theme week:
andragogy (AN-druh-goh-jee) - n., the methods or techniques used to teach adults.
pedagogy (PED-uh-goh-jee) - n., the art, science, or profession of teaching.
Adults learn differently than young children, being more self-directed and tending to want to learn specific things. Pedagogy is ultimately from Greek paidagōgos, slave who escorted children to school, from paid- (stem of paîs) child + agōgos leader, from agein to lead. Andragogy was constructed in the 1920s on the model of pedagogy, from Greek root andr(os), man (in the specific sense of male).
