For some people, these are times of visual and auditory hallucination, and the dreamlike experiences in such states are sometimes called waking dreams (not to be confused with daydreaming). The two states are sometimes conflated, but they are different: in the former, you are trying to come to terms with the non-linear associations of the unconscious, while in the latter, you are trying to come to grips with the solid world. Hypnagogic was adopted in 1886 from French hypnagogique, from Ancient Greek hupnos, sleep + agōgos, leading, while hypnopompic was coined around 1901 on its model, with the second element from Greek pompē, a sending forth, escort.
