viburnum (VAY-bur-nuhm) - n., any of several shrubs of the genus Viburnum having opposite leaves and showy terminal clusters of small white or pink flowers.
Grown as ornamentals. Includes the wayfaring tree, guelder-rose, and arrowwood (so called because its straight stems have been used for arrow shafts). The genus name comes from the Latin name for the wayfaring tree (now called Viburnum lantana though it's not actually a lantana), vīburnum, thought to be of Etruscan origin.
