tragus (TRAY-guhs) - n., the small cartilaginous flap in front of the external opening of the ear.
Adopted in the late 17th century from Greek, where it was supposedly literally named "the goat" because of the tuft of hairs that grows on it as men age looks something like the beard of a billy-goat. There is some skepticism over this story, but it is what the ancient Greeks said about the word. I myself don't care what you call it, but I really wish the hairs wouldn't grow because the danged thing tickle. Gnah!
