corncrake (KORN-krayk) - n., a common Eurasian rail (Crex crex) that breeds in meadows and arable farmland.


A crake that gets in the corn, in other words. In Britain, long-billed birds of that family tend to be called rails while short-billed species are crakes -- not a distinction not kept over here in the New World, where they all are called rails.
