As when asking "You did what
" This is more commonly indicated by not combining the question and exclamation marks, but using both: "You did what?!" -- or sometimes, depending on the emphasis, !? The mark in question (heh) was created in 1962 by Martin Speckter, the head of a New York advertizing agency, and named by a reader of TYPEtalks Magazine, coined from interrogation (for the question mark) + bang (printer’s jargon/slang for the exclamation mark).
