theodicy - n., the branch of theology that defends God's benevolence and omnipotence in the face of the existence of evil.
Or to put it the other way around, attempts to reconcile the existence of evil with the assumption of a benevolent God. A single such attempt can be called "a theodicy." Coined by Liebniz from Greek theos, god + dike, justice.
