bollard (BOL-erd) - n., (naut.) a short, thick post on a warf or quay to which mooring lines from vessels are attached; a short post used to control or divert traffic.
In the latter sense, more common in British than American usage. Surprisingly for a naval term, it's relatively recent: first citation is to 1844, probably derived from bole in the sense of a tree trunk -- before then, they were just called posts.
