wrasse (RAS) - n., any of numerous often brightly colored marine fishes of the family Labridae, having spiny fins and thick lips and valued for food and for home aquariums.
By numerous meaning about 800 species, all told. Given the aquariums, it shouldn't be surprising that most are under 20cm (8in) long. Adopted around 1670 from the plural of Cornish (the Celtic language, not the English dialect) wragh, a lenited form of gwragh, meaning the fist but originally/literally, old woman/hag (compare Welsh gwrach and Breton gwrac’h, both used in both senses).
