stele (STEE-lee, STEEL) or stela (STEEL-leh) - n., an upright stone slab or pillar bearing an inscription or design and serving as a monument, marker, or the like.

Two forms being from Greek and the Latin version of same, with plurals steles or stelai and stelas or stelae, respectively -- stelae is never correct for the singular form stele, despite what you might see. The PIE root is *stel-, to put/stand (in place).
