inion (in-EE-uhn) - n., the most prominent projecting point of the occipital bone at the base of the skull.


So, no, not a type of ion. This is the bump just above the nape of the neck. Because it's easy to find, it is used as a reference point in skull measurements -- it otherwise has no important medical significance. Adopted around 1811 from medical Latin, from Greek īníon, back of the skull/occipital bone/nape of the neck, from os/on-, sinew + diminutive suffix.
