And not, as I usually think, a curse -- it's an act, not statement, of evil. (Confusing it with malediction, of course.) Adopted around the start of the 15th century (in the form malefaccioun) from Latin, meaning done wrong, from malefacere, to do wrong, from male, ill + facere, do.
