hake (HAYK) - n., any of several edible marine fish of the genera Merluccius and Urophycis (and sometimes Phycis) closely related to and resembling cod or haddock.
An important food fish of the North Atlantic, though some species are found throughout the world. Etymology is cloudy, but all agree there is some connection to Old English haca, hook, possibly by an intermediate form such as haked, hooked, for the shape of the jaw. Found in a Georgette Heyer novel in which a minor character is described as being so unfortunate as to have a face like one.
