androsphinx
Aug. 26th, 2015 07:41 amandrosphinx (AN-druh-sfingks) - n., a sphinx with the head of a man.
As opposed both to the criosphinx and hieracosphinx of the last two days and to the sphinx of Greek mythology, which had the head of a woman. The human-headed sphinxes of ancient Egypt were all androsphinxes (or, if you prefer, androsphinges), as were those of the ancient New East. (The Greek sphinx -- there was only one, the one Oedipus met -- had a name, btw: Phix (Φίξ) according to Hesiod.)
