descanso (des-KAN-soh) - n., a roadside memorial to a victim of an automobile accident.
Common by the roads and streets here in the southwestern United States -- the simplest version is a white cross, but can get quite elaborate in a very Catholic way. This started as a Hispanic custom, not surprisingly given the name: from Spanish descanso, resting place (of a dead person), from descansar, to (have a) rest.
