sennit / sennet / sinnet
Sep. 18th, 2015 07:50 amsennit or sennet or sinnet (SEN-it) - n., flat braided cordage made from plaiting strands of rope yarn, used as small cordage aboard ships; braided straw or grass used in making hats.
Such as a straw boater, for the latter sense. First attested around 1770, origin unknown, but one speculation is perhaps from French coussinet, diminutive of cousin, meaning cushion, because it's used to protect cables from fraying.
