combe or coombe or coomb (KOOM) - n., a deep, narrow valley, esp. wooded and without a river/stream; a cirque in a hill.


British English, almost unknown in the States (can't say one way or another about Canada here). From Old English, ultimately from a Celtic source -- compare Welsh cwm, cirque.
