ogdoad (OG-doh-ad) - n., a group of eight.
From (via Latin) Greek ogdoás, derivative of ógdoos, eighth, from oktō, eight, with a sound change we don't often see in words derived from that language -- octo-, we know, but not ogdo-. The word also has a specific meaning: the pantheon of eight deities worshipped in Hermopolis during the Egyptian Old Kingdom (who were, if you're interested, Nu and Naunet (the waters), Amun and Amaunet (air), Kuk and Kauket (darkness), Huh and Hauhet (eternity)).
