doryphore or doriphore (DOR-uh-for) - n., a pedantic and annoyingly persistent critic.
The sort who "derives intense satisfaction from pointing out the errors of others," as the coiner, Sir Harold Nicholson, defined it in the Spectator in 1952. He took the name from the French name for the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) -- which is, yes, a pest. The French name comes from the old name for the genus, Doryphora, with a name taken (for no obvious reason) from the ancient Greek for a spear-carrier.
