gadwall (GAD-wawl) - n., a medium-sized dabbling duck (Anas strepera) with grey-brown plumage found throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere.


Also called the grey duck. Physically resembles the mallard in size and shape, and females also in coloration. The origin of the name is completely unknown (I'm not even seeing speculations), but it's attested from 1666.
