dunlin (DUHN-lin) - n., a small sandpiper (Calidris alpina) that breeds in northern regions of the Northern hemisphere.


A type of stint, which seems to be a generic name for any of various small sandpiper. This one is more distinctive than the others, having rusty brown above and white below and a black patch on the chest during breeding season. Highly gregarious in its winter quarters of temperate coastlines. Name is first recorded in 1552 in the form dunling, as in little dun-colored thing.
