prorogate / derogate
Mar. 9th, 2016 07:54 amprorogate or more commonly prorogue (PROH-rohg) - v., to discontinue meetings (of a legislative body) without dissolving it; to defer, postpone.
derogate (DER-uh-gayt) - v., to disparage, belittle; to take something away so as to lessen or detract from.
The second being the verb form of derogatory. The similar root for both is Latin rogare, to ask or to propose a law, with prefixes pro-, before and de-, from/away -- so the original sense of derogate was to repeal a law.
