paraph (PAR-uhf, puh-RAF) - n., a flourish made after or below a signature.


Originally done to make it harder to forge. Also used as a verb, to add one to a signature. In Middle English it was spelled paraf, from either Italian parafo or Middle French paraphe or paraffe, both meaning paragraph mark, a shortened form of Latin paragraphus, paragraph.
