thylacine (THAI-luh-sain, THAI-luh-sin) - n., an extinct, somewhat doglike carnivorous marsupial (Thylacinus cynocephalus) of Tasmania, with a tan coat with black stripes across the back.
Also called the Tasmanian tiger or Tasmanian wolf. Mark that as probably extinct, as of 18936 century, as it was nocturnal, shy, and inhabited the more remote habitats and so not very well seen when it was known to be alive -- and there are presistent reports of unconfirmed sightings. It was one of the two marsupials where the male also has a pouch (to protect genitals in the rough bush). Name comes from the genus name, from Greek thĂșlakos, pouch/sack.
