tranche (TRAHNCH) - n., a slice, section, or portion of a pool or a whole; specifically, (Finance) an issue of bonds derived from a pooling of like obligations (as securitized mortgage debt). v., to divide into parts.


The latter being differentiated from other bond issues by such factors as maturity or rate of return. Adopted originally around 1500 from French tranche, a slice, from trancher/trencher, to cut (which was also previously adopted as the ancestor of trench), with the financial sense developing, in English only, around 1930.
