oriflamme - n., the battle standard of the medieval kings of France (which was red or orange-red with two or three points); an inspiring symbol that serves as a rallying point in a struggle.


From Old French, from Latin aurea flamma, golden flame. The standard was the flag of the abbey of St. Denis, near Paris, given by the abbot to the king on setting out to war (especially wars against infidels). Another O Darn word.
