luthier (LOO-tee-er) - n., someone who makes or repairs stringed instruments.
Originally lutes, but now applied to makers of guitars, mandolins, violins, etc. Does NOT apply to stringed instruments such as harps or pianos -- just those consisting of a neck and a sound box. They do not make violin bows -- for that, you need an archetier (such as my brother-in-law). Adopted around 1875 from French, where it was constructed from luth, lute (from Old French lut, from Old Provençal laut, ultimately from Arabic al ʿūd literally, the wood) + -ier, suffix denoting a person producing/associated with the stem.
