farl or farle (FAHRL) - n., a quarter of a thin, round oatmeal or wheatflour cake.
Or even, in Northern Ireland, potato bread cake. In Scotland, though, it's a quarter piece of a large flat scone or bannock (oatcake). Used in this form since 1686, shortened from fardle, meaning fourth part (of a round cake), from Middle English ferdell, from Old English fēortha dǣl, fourth part (that last part also coming down to us as deal).
