viburnum (vay-BUR-nuhm) - n., any of 150+ species of temperate shrubs (genus Viburnum) with showy clusters of small white or pink flowers and red or black berry-like fruits; the dried bark of various Viburnum species used medicinally.

Formerly classified as part of the honeysuckle family and sometimes still described as such in the slower dictionaries. The best-known member is the ornamental V. opulus, commonly called guelder-rose or snowball-tree, which is a national symbol for Ukraine. The genus is named after the Latin name for V. lantana, most commonly called the wayfaring tree in English -- which Latin name may be an Etruscan borrowing.
