prettygoodwordbullace (BOOL-is) - n., a small Eurasian plum (Prunus domestica insititia or P. insititia) that's the wild ancestor of the domesticated damson; another name for damson itself; another name for muscadine.
Also sometimes used as another name for sloe, even though that is another species of Prunus. Using it as a synonym for damson is confusing as well, and I strongly disapprove of that (it's like using guanaco as another name for llama). In the early 14th century this was spelled bolace/bolaz and variations, from either Anglo-French bulloce or Old French beloce, from Medieval Latin bolluca, possibly of Gaulish origin.
