bettong (buh-TAWNG, buh-TONG) - n., any of the four species of marsupials of the genus Bettongia, comprising the short-nosed rat-kangaroos.
Despite the name, they are closer to rabbit-sized, but do have short, rounded ears and rat-like tails -- here's some pics. The four species are the Boodie, Woylie, Eastern bettong, and Northern bettong, all of them endangered. The name is from an aboriginal language, probably Dharuk (in the Port Jackson/Sidney area) ba-daŋ.
