smaragdine (smuh-RAG-din) - adj., of or relating to emeralds; emerald-green in color.

emerant (EM-uhr-ant) - n. and adj., (Scot.) emerald.

Same thing, really, though it's not obvious under the centuries of sound changes. Smaragdine was adopted in the 14th century as smaragd from Latin smaragdīnus, from Greek smarágdinos, adjectival form of smáragdos, emerald, from a Semitic language (though Sanskrit marataka, emerald, has also been suggested). Emerant/Emerald comes from the same Latin source, only taken through Old French esmeralde (from Vulgar Latin *smaralda) only to lose the -s-.
