bract (BRAKT) - n., a specialized leaf at the base of a flower or inflorescence.

Don't ask me to explain the difference between flower and inflorescence -- I haven't had my coffee yet and don't get it. Coined in 1771 from Latin bractea, thin plate of metal, esp. gold leaf.
