cucurbit (kyoo-KUR-bit) - n., a gourd; any member of the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) of climbing or trailing plants; a gourd-shaped chemical vessel formerly used in distillation.

Cucurbits include gourds, cucumbers, squashes, pumpkins, watermelons, melons, and luffas -- a little less than a thousand species in all. The word's been around in English since the 14th century, adopted via French from Latin cucurbita, gourd.
