tantivy (tan-TIV-ee) - adv., at full gallop. adj., swift, rapid. n., a gallup, a rush. int., (used as a hunting cry when the chase is at full speed).


As you might guess from the definitions, this is strongly connected with hunting, though it's certainly had its generic metaphoric uses. Not as common as it once was, regardless, much like hunting on horseback. Dates to 1641, origin is unknown, with possible explanations being from the sound of galloping hooves and the sound of the horn.
