dundrearies (duhn-DREER-eez) - n., long, flowing sideburns worn with a clean-shaven chin.

Named after the character of Lord Dundreary, as portrayed by actor Edward A. Sothern, in the 1858 play Our American Cousin by English dramatist Tom Taylor -- the first usage being from about nine years later, in 1867. The play would otherwise be deservedly forgotten but for this and the historical detail that President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated during a performance of it.
