I was off yesterday, making this a short week, and I just happen to have four four-letter words in my queue -- so I think we've got a theme week. Actually, a double-theme week, as they are all words I learned by playing Words With Friends. So, yeah, obscure.


bidi or beedi (BEE-dee) - n., (India) an inexpensive, often flavored, hand-rolled cigarette made with cut tobacco rolled in a leaf.


From Hindi bīṛī, from Sanskrit vīṭakam/vīṭikam, a mixture of betel nuts, herbs, and spices wrapped in a leaf.

"bidi" is also used in computing to mean "bidirectional" as in "This layout algorithm properly handles bidi text like a mix of Arabic and Latin letters."
