chub (CHUHB) - n., any of several usually stout-bodied European freshwater carp, especially the European chub (Squalius cephalus, formerly Leuciscus cephalus); any of several unrelated, similar-appearing fish, including the North American black bass (genus Micropterus), the sea chub, and the tautog (Tautoga onitis, which is actually a wrasse).

The name dates back to Middle English as chubbe, origin uncertain, but possibly from the same root as chubby, which is Old Norse kubbr, block/stump/log.
