prettygoodwordSince flu got in the way of completing that theme week of fishes, I'm gonna extend it all this week -- there are a lot of funky fish names, after all. So let's keep this going with:
spikedace (SPAIK-days) - n., a scaleless, mottled, olive-brown fish (Meda fulgida) of the Gila River system in New Mexico and Arizona.
Formerly endemic to throughout the Gila River basin, but due to loss of habitat (including actual running water), it's now found only in Aravaipa Creek , the upper Verde River, and the upper Gila River. Dace is a kind of freshwater carp relative, of which this is one, and the spike seems to come from its having two dorsal spines.
