bream (BREEM) - n., any of several narrow, deep-bodied species of marine and freshwater fish with silvery scales, especially: various freshwater European fishes of the genus Abramis, including the common bream or carp bream (A. brama); any of several porgies of the genus Pagellus and allied genera, including the sea bream (Archosargus rhomboidalis; and any of several freshwater sunfishes of the genus Lepomis and allied genera.

Some breams are more valued for food than others. The name appeared in Middle English as breme, from Anglo-French, from Old French bresme/braisme, from conjectured Frankish form *brahsima, cognate to other old Germanic forms.
