ormer (AWR-mer) - n., (UK) any abalone, especially Haliotis tuberculata native to the Channel Islands.

The abalone being a large marine snail with a wide, flat, spiral shell, prized world-wide both as eminently edible and for the iridescent mother-of-pearl interior of its shell. The name entered standard English in the 17th century from the Channel Islands, from Guernsey dialect French, from French ormier, short for oreille-de-mer, translation of Latin auris maris, literally sea-ear, from the earlike shape of the shell.
