Sometimes taken to mean smelling strongly like an animal in general, but most authorities agree on the narrow definition. This one arrived via French from Latin jumentum, beast of burden (from jugum, a yoke), which to the Romans meant specifically a horse or mule. It fell out of use by the end of the 19th century.
